Say ‘boxing’ and many of us think of scowling superheavyweights with incredible sculpted muscles. At any level, boxing demands and produces high levels of fitness.
Fortunately there’s no need to take a bashing to get the benefits of boxing, as it translates to a non-contact workout. You can either hit bags and targets, or do all the moves without actually landing any punches.
Here are 10 good reasons to try boxing for fitness:
We’ve all had moments when we really want to thump something or someone. Boxing training allows you to do just that with no damage or repercussions.
2.BOOST THAT CARDIO
The jumps, punches and moves of a boxing workout really get the heart and lungs pumping, but you can still go at your own pace. Perfect for improving cardio fitness.
3.TONE THOSE ARMS
The gloves alone will get those arms working, and the moves certainly will. A great way to fight saggy arms at any age.
4.BURN THAT FAT
A medium to high intensity boxing training session can burn up to 500 calories.
5.WORK THOSE LEGS
Dance, jump, hop – boxing moves are great to get legs in action.
6.GET FIT, NOT BULKY
Lots of reps but low or no weight means toning up without getting bigger. That means firmer and tighter muscles but not great big ones.
7.MAKE SOME FRIENDS
You might be throwing punches at a partner, but you are aiming for pads not person. A boxing workout is a sociable way to get fit without hurting your new friends.
8.NEVER BE BORED
With a good trainer, no two boxing workouts will ever be the same. There’s no chance of zoning out or slowing down.
Landing the punch correctly on a bag or target means co-ordinating ‘aim’ and ‘fire’, and is harder than it looks. Practice really makes perfect.
10.BUILD THOSE BONES
‘Floating like a butterfly’ actually means doing some weight-bearing, which is good news for bone health now and in the future.
Think outside the box, get boxing!
